For $1.15 million, the AP reports. The movie and the book were inspired by the case of Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr., who killed his parents, two brothers and two sisters in Long Island, N.Y.
"The Amityville Horror" was about a family that lived in the home for a short time after the DeFeos were murdered; the new occupants left because they claimed to have been terrorized by paranormal activity. Newsday quotes a real-estate agent who says the home has been restored and "nothing spooky about it."

Have the Ghost Hunters been there yet? I'd believe it was clear if they say it is.

I read that Amityville Horror book as a kid. At the end, it said that after moving, the Lutz's had no more problems.
Then, later they came out with Amityville Horror 2 - and the same couple were claiming that the poltergeist followed them and continued to torment them for years.
They completely lost credibility as far as I'm concerned.

I didnt think that they wrote the second one. I thought that was hollywood.

Well, it's a beautiful house and I wouldn't be afraid of it. I don't buy the haunting stories at all.
I wouldn't want to live in it though because of the DeFeo thing. I'd think about it too much and would feel like my home was a sad place. Not haunted, just sad.
I rented a little house next to a graveyard for many years in SE Mo. It never bothered me. I'm scared of the live people, not the dead ones. I had very quiet neighbors.

Jellybean, as long as you leave out Bud Light and cheetos, I don't think any ghost would be a bother.
Posted by: aqua | Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 09:54 AM
I always do.
Funny thing is - I believe in ghosts. I just don't think they're anything to be afraid of.

Bud light and Cheetos...I love it!

I worked as a customer service rep for phone company and this lady called in who grew up with the Defeos teenager who committed murders and she said he was a very heavy drug addict and that's why he heard voices.
Posted by: Lilly | Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 12:33 PM
More likely he suffered from Schizophrenia and self-medicated with the drugs.
Posted by: Ralfred | Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 01:04 PM
It's an ugly house anyway.
Posted by: cripjak | Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 01:16 PM
You're looking at the side-view, cripjak. Everyone does that because it makes those attic windows look like eyes. It's actually a really cool house.
Posted by: Jellybean | Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 02:48 PM
Okay geek that I am I sort of remembered and then looked it up, Amityville II is actually a prequal to the original Amityville movie and is loosly based on the Defeo family as the teenage son is the one possessed and I think does kill the family in the movie. I also remember some taboo stuff with him and the sister.
Here's a Wikipedia link:

I saw some show on t.v. and they said that after the Defeo shooting, the crime scene photographers had taken a photo, and in that picture was a kid. They showed the picture (b&w). There were no kids in the house during this time.

JB---I lived for 4 yrs in an apt. above my families funeral home. Now that was a cool place to live.

Jellybean - Jason Hawes from Ghost Hunters said in an interview something to the effect that he doubted the whole story, and that he thought George Lutz had simply got in over his head financially when he bought the house.
Posted by: wordkyle | Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 09:25 PM
I seen all of the movies and that house was haunted and it scared me to hell. I took photos of the house and there were demons in on one of the top windows and on the bottom windows but my wife made me throw the photos away.
Posted by: manuel zarate | Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 11:36 PM
Been there and it is a beautiful house and neighborhood. I doubt the people in the neighborhood or the town itself is too happy with the negative haunted publicity. There are also a lot of people out there with 1.5 mil that is just pocket change and I bet not one is interested. No money to be made from this as the Amityville Horror house because of it's location. I mean, don't you think if there were, the present owner could make a lot more by promoting it than they could by selling it. Without a doubt...

Hollywood and the lutz's (May they both RIP) have made a mockery out of a
tradgedy that took innocent lives that fatefull nite.
I hope the Defeos have found eternal peace and Ronald JR. has found eternal
damnation for his crimes.

@ Redqueen: I think that they're talking about the second book in the series. There were three of them published.
I believed the first one, the second one had me skeptical & after the third one I knew that they were making the whole thing up. The final book has the dad wrestling the demon the ground & strangling/punching the demon to death. It was told in such an overly hyped up manner that you could tell it was completely made up.
It's people like the Lutz family that make the REAL hauntings that much harder to believe.
Posted by: Mickey | Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 01:12 PM
While it is a very beautiful house and I believe the 'HAUNTING' is a huge load of crap(noone else ever had problems there, what, did the demons just hate the Lutzes?)the house has a very small lot, large house but not huge by any means and is quite frankly not worth $100,150,000.00 in anyway, whatsoever. The present owners only paid $310,000.00. Not greedy are we?

It's a beautiful home. Found the listing on realtor.com and the inside is amazing. While the haunting stuff wouldn't bother me, it would bother me to live in a house where six people were brutally murdered.

It was a good story, and for those who like to believe it and are interested in it, then be interested in it, for those who think it is a crock of hooky, then think that too, but as for me, I remember the book and I have seen the picture also of the little boy in the house that was taken in the house when noone was there, and by all means, I think it is a true photo, because I would like to think IF the house was thought of as haunted back then, why would anyone leave a young boy in the home alone like that just for a photo? Maybe now that the house is for sale, hopefully the new owners will allow Ghost Hunters or a paranormal team to film some footage for America and to finally end the "is it or isn't it" theories or speculations. I would love to go and walk around in the house and investigate , don't know if I would live there because a piece of me enjoys the thrill of the feeling of being "spooked" just looking at the house, and I don't want to know really if it isn't haunted, I just like knowing "it could be".......

I wonder if they ever sold this property? 1M dollars seems a bit much for spooks. They should also look into renting the property out. This looks like a good venue for parties....
