Public defenders threaten to stop taking cases in St. Louis County

The public defenders in St. Louis County say they're overworked and are threatening to refuse any new cases there, the Post-Dispatch reports. The defenders in Troy and Springfield have taken similar steps, and you might remember there was a problem with this last summer, too. The prosecutor isn't terribly sympathetic and accuses the defenders of sandbagging.

"They are counting their cases in some magical way," he said.
