Oh, did I forget to mention that?

George Smithey -- a California inmate whose death sentence was recently commuted to life without parole -- hanged himself over the weekend. A judge agreed to a lighter sentence because of Smithey's mental retardation. The salient fact:

The spokesman said he did not know whether Smithey had been told that a Calaveras County judge overturned his death sentence Aug. 23.
