Frederick Jones' parents speak about charges against store clerk

The parents of Frederick Jones Jr. -- whose shooting death has now led to a manslaughter charge for a gas-station clerk -- spoke to reporters this evening at the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime's offices. Jackson County prosecutors announced charges against Akbar Rana earlier today, and this was a chance for Jones' family to speak up.

His parents, Vanessa Boykin and Frederick Jones Sr., confirmed that Jones had schizophrenia, but said that he was harmless. "He killed my baby for no reason," Boykin said. She added that her son, who had worked construction with his dad, had self-medicated with alcohol.

"They knew him by name," she said, "and they knew he had a problem."

They're pleased that Rana is going to be prosecuted, but they think the charge is lighter than what it should be. The elder Jones compared it to a "pat on the back."

"It just didn't have to happen the way it happened," Frederick Jones Sr. said.
