The FBI has caught an escaped prisoner who had been on the run for 36 years -- and it's largely because his dying mother had asked to see him, CNN reports.
"She asked various family members to assist her in using the 'secret' number to call 'Billy,'" the FBI said. Agents had been tipped off about the conversation by a source.
Armed with that information, agents scoured phone records of people who they believed may have helped fulfill the mother's request.

A Kansas City man is accused of killing his mother-in-law late Monday night in Old Northeast, Christine Vendel reports.
Jackson County prosecutors filed charges against Michael S. Tittone, 27, on Tuesday. Police were called to the 3500 block of St. John Avenue, where Tittone and his wife lived with the victim, Pamela Groves.
Tittone told police he was working in the basement when Groves came home and started arguing with him. He said the argument “became heated,” according to police reports, so he went upstairs to the kitchen.
The argument continued in the kitchen and Tittone got his gun out, according to court records. Groves allegedly hit Tittone “in the throat,” according to police reports. Tittone said that when Groves allegedly tried to hit him again, he shot her in the abdomen. She collapsed on the kitchen floor.
A man dressed as a woman robbed a Prairie Village bank this afternoon, the FBI reported.
The case marks the third time in a month that a black man dressed as a woman has robbed area banks.
U.S. Bank at 6940 Mission Road was robbed at about 1:45 today, the FBI said. The suspect did not show a weapon, they said, and was described as wearing a black curly wig and red lip stick and a white short sleeve shirt and black pants.
I don't think today's outfit was as dressy as the previous two outings:
The hit-and-run death in March of a 3-year-old boy in the 4300 block of Pittman Road led to charges Monday against a 65-year-old Kansas City man.
William Wayne Neighbors faces a single felony count of leaving the scene of an injury motor vehicle accident.
Landon Carlson was getting mail from a mailbox with two older boys when Neighbors, driving a blue minivan with wood trim, struck him and accelerated away, court records alleged. Landon died of head injuries the next day.
Neighbors appeared at the Raytown Police Department, identifying himself as “the driver of the vehicle that had struck the child at 43rd Street and Pittman Road,” according to court records.
If someone gets caught with a minuscule amount of marijuana -- so small that authorities can't even charge them with a misdemeanor -- should child-welfare officials be able to take away their kids?
The New York Times had a really good story about this trend last week. Police there will hotline parents in these situations if investigators don't have a strong enough case against the parents themselves.
Prosecutors have filed to drop sex-crime charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn, a former International Monetary Fund official who was accused of assaulting a hotel housekeeper in New York City.
The prosecutors came to that decision because of problems with the housekeeper's credibility. That woman, Nafissatou Diallo, has filed a civil suit against Strauss-Kahn.

There was a huge vigil on Thursday night for Samir Clark, who was fatally shot on Tuesday night. Glenn and I have a followup report about the case. KCPD is still looking for whoever killed the 19-year-old:
Before Samir Clark went to his cousin’s apartment Tuesday night, his mom took him aside for a talk.
He would be leaving for college soon and she wanted to remind him about staying true to his values, staying humble, doing the right thing.
That night, as he played a video game with cousin Voncell Brownlee, a neighbor banged on the door.
“Please help my kids,” the woman pleaded. Police said a man had confronted her and she fled in fear.
