Police make grim descovery in a van

From Christine Vendel:

Kansas City police are investigating the death of a person whose decomposed body was found this morning in a van.

Someone reported the body at 8:46 a.m. on 40th Street in between Norton and Jackson avenues. The caller said the van had been parked there for several days and was emitting a foul odor.

The van was parked on the grass next to a line of thick brush along a section of the road where several back yards meet.

Police did not know whether the death was natural, or a suicide or homicide. Police towed the van with the body inside to the morgue. Police could not determine the victim’s race or gender.

Justice for Dominique Henderson

Dom Dominique Henderson was only 12 years old when he was murdered in June 2005 in his back yard at 33rd and College. Dominique had just gotten from a nap and gone outside when he was murdered -- he'd wanted to know what was for dinner.

Unfortunately, that's when a group of gang members decided to open fire on his house -- some of their rivals had been hanging out on Dominique's porch. I don't know if you remember, but 2005 was a particularly bad year for KCMO homicides, and this case outraged the public.

Yesterday, James C. Martin, 20, received a 28-year sentence for his part in the slaying. Mark Morris has more here.
