Remote patrol

"Dear America," a charming and surprisingly high-gloss series aimed at young girls, has a new episode at 6:30 p.m. on HBO. Following on the success of historical novels such as the "American Girls" series, "Dear America" tells the story tonight of Mary Driscoll (played by Laura Bertram), an 18-year-old Irish immigrant during her first months in her new country in 19th-century Massachusetts. As always, there's a social theme to the story; in Mary's case, it's the unsafe working conditions of the textile mill where she works long hours and endures abuse from others who look down on her status and, in particular, her ethnicity. Also tonight, Helen Baxendale returns to "Mystery! " (8 p.m., Channel 19) for another round as P.D. James' 20-something detective Cordelia Gray. This time, she's pregnant. >>>
