Remote patrol

Srebrenica. By now it ought to be a byword for unconscionable horror. Yet how much do we know of the mostly Muslim Bosnian village that was the scene of the worst European massacre since World War II? If anything can sear the name of Srebrenica into our consciences, it is "Srebrenica: A Cry From the Grave" (9 tonight, Channel 19), a gut-wrenching documentary that relives that terrible week in 1995 when the United Nations' first "safe area" was overrun by Serb troops. More than 7,000 men and boys were marched out of the area, never to be seen again. Bill Moyers narrates this film, which chronicles the siege and fall of Srebrenica and asks how it happened. Viewers will see a steady stream of chilling images: the leader of the UN forces in 1993 assuring Muslim refugees that they were now safe, to loud cheers; commander Ratko Mladic telling Serbian TV that "the time has come to take revenge on the Muslims"; the tedious work of identifying victims buried in mass graves; Bosnian Serbs whooping it up after the slaughter. @ART CAPTION:Bosnian Serb General Mladic took control of Srebrenica on July 12, 1995. Within a few days his troops massacred more than 7,000 Muslim men. @ART:Photo
