Remote patrol

For this they pulled "Jesse"?! "God, the Devil and Bob" (7:30 tonight, Channel 41), NBC's latest attempt at cartoon comedy, takes its premise from the book of Job, a book that is not exactly a barrel of laughs. A supreme deity voiced by James Garner (but looking a lot like Jerry Garcia) decides he has had it with Earth. Then he has a change of heart, sort of, and asks Satan (Alan Cumming) to choose an Earthling who will persuade God to spare the planet. The devil's uninspired choice is a beer-guzzling lunkhead named Bob (French Stewart). Problem: The show immediately turns him into a lovable loser who wins over his Maker by his acts of tender-heartedness. Nice premise for a CBS movie, but not for a "Simpsons"-esque sitcom. There's one solid laugh, but it's the very last line uttered on tonight's episode after 22 minutes of awkward pauses and leaden jokes. Bob may save the earth, but not even James Garner can save this show. @ART CAPTION:The devil (left) hoists a cocktail with God. @ART:Photo (color) >>>
