Some new shows arrive Sunday

The beginning of the fall TV season was moved to this Monday after network executives decided last Monday was too close to the events of Sept. 11. However, in the scramble to reschedule show premieres, ABC, CBS and NBC all wound up with new programs to air on Sunday, one day before the official season start. Richard Dreyfuss stars in a new CBS series, "The Education of Max Bickford," beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday on Channel 5. Dreyfuss plays an irritable, middle-aged college professor. The strong supporting cast includes Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden ("Pollock") and Regina Taylor ("I'll Fly Away"). "The Practice" will return for its sixth season 8 p.m. on ABC (Channel 9). It's a two-hour special centered on Ellenor's (Camryn Manheim) efforts to defend a prominent politician accused of murder. New series regular Ron Livingston also will appear; he plays an assistant D.A. NBC will counter that with "50 Years of Late Night," a clip reel of highlights from all the network's great late-night hosts, including Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Tom Snyder and (from his old "Late Night" days) David Letterman. Conan O'Brien is host of the two-hour special, which airs at 8 p.m. on Channel 41.
