P.S.

Playing it safe When she feels sad, fifth-grader Jolene Hunt imagines a hidden valley covered by a dome. "There wasn't anybody else there," she said, "but the people I love." Now Jolene and her classmates at Northview Elementary School in the Olathe district are hoping their visions of safe places will help children cope with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Their drawings are being included in the book Safe Space written by Leigh Kelly and illustrated by Teresa Kelley, both of Lawrence. The book will be available Friday at the Web site www.writeworkstudios.com and at Borders Books-Music-Cafe in Lawrence. - Sarah Gerry/The Star 'Private Ryan' rescue Thanks to director Steven Spielberg, Kansas Citians who were prevented from watching the final 15 minutes of ABC's unedited broadcast of "Saving Private Ryan" Sunday night will get a second chance to see how it ends. With Spielberg's blessing, ABC affiliate KMBC, Channel 9, will re-air the final half hour of "Saving Private Ryan" at 10:30 p.m. today, following the station's late local newscast. Channel 9's transmitter unexpectedly shut down shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday for reasons that remained unclear Monday afternoon. KMBC general manager Wayne Godsey said the outage affected all viewers without cable as well as customers of Comcast and most Kansas subscribers to Time Warner Cable. In Missouri, where KMBC's signal is fed directly to Time Warner's facility, viewers were not affected. - Aaron Barnhart/The Star A Talent show Jim Talent, Missouri's likely Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate next year, will meet with voters tonight in Blue Springs.
