Take note

Heppner cancels show Tenor Ben Heppner has laryngitis and has canceled his winter recital tour, including the Feb. 1 show at the Folly Theater. The singer's management said Tuesday that Heppner's doctor has recommended that he rest at home to recover fully from the ailment, which forced him to cut short a Jan. 17 recital in Toronto. "I think, for us all, I need to stop," Heppner told the Canadian audience from the stage. The Harriman Arts Program said it hopes to be able to announce a replacement for the Feb. 1 date by the end of the week. - Paul Horsley/The Star 'Zoom' gets local input Beginning Friday, episodes of the PBS kids' show "Zoom" will include segments produced by KCPT, Channel 19, with children from the Kansas City area. Among upcoming segments: students at Pinkerton Elementary School in central Kansas City volunteer their time to be with elderly people, and two sisters raise money to help a shelter for abused children. It's part of an experiment by PBS to create local components to nationally distributed programs like "Zoom," which recently was revived after a successful run in the 1970s. "Zoom," which airs at 6:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays on KCPT, will feature the Kansas City segments on Fridays. A companion Web site will go online next month at www.KCPT.org/zoom. - Aaron Barnhart/The Star
