For years, whenever we would drive up to rural Minnesota to visit the in-laws, I have always made a point to drive into town and pick up the daily Minneapolis Star-Tribune. In particular, I've always thought its features section was edited by people who really enjoy reading.

And now, its owner owns us. Given the various scenarios that were awaiting our chain, that's a relief.
It's not great news for my colleagues in other markets (including St. Paul, though they eliminated the TV critic's position a year ago). But McClatchy's CEO is right: These are "terrific publications," even if he doesn't want them. They're great American newspapers. Of course they're terrific. But will the company that winds up owning them respect that?


I'm sure the staff at the Philly Daily News thought that they were going to be shut down, but instead they're going to be sold with the Inky. I wonder if McClatchy will sell the two papers separately--and if Rupert Murdoch might go for The People Paper.
