Why does PTC hate the V-chip?

That's the question being asked by TV Watch, which seems to be positioning itself as the anti-Parents Television Council.

While I admire this tactic, TV Watch ought to be careful not to get pulled down to the PTC's level.  I like their work; eventually they'll want to aim higher.

LATEST PARENTS TELEVISION TIRADE IGNORES PARENTS’ PREFERENCES

The Parents Television Council struck again with its trademark technique of inaccurate information delivered with bombast, this time in attacking the $300m public education campaign to encourage the use of parental controls like the V-Chip.

Why would anyone who wants people to pick and choose programming that befits their individual tastes and values complain about a campaign like this?  Perhaps because they do not really want people to decide. Perhaps because the PTC think they should decide for everyone else about what constitutes “wretched excess” on TV.  Perhaps they realize that most of us enjoy the popular shows that the PTC regularly blasts – shows like The Simpsons, Desperate Housewives & CSI.

The PTC tirade against this public education campaign runs counter to public opinion on every score.  Opinion surveys show that 82 percent of adults prefer to exercise their own personal choice over what they watch on television and an even higher percentage (87%) reject the idea of an elite few like the PTC dictating what others can see on TV.

The vast majority of voters agree that TV ratings and parental control tools make it possible to control what’s on TV inside the home, while the PTC falsely claims that those tools are too hard to use.

Beware of those who preach that it is too hard to decide for yourself.  Chances are, they’re plotting to decide for you.
