"Dan deserves better," says Max Robins in this week's Broadcasting & Cable about the bum's rush being afforded the now-formally-ousted CBS anchor. Frazier Moore hit it more on the head, I thought, when he argued that you knew, given Rather's stubbornness, that his tenure at CBS was bound to end badly. And so it has.
A moment of silence for Dan.
And now, a moment of silence for Harry Shearer's "Bad Day at Black Rock" bit, which probably played its last chapter this weekend.
I talked to Harry on Tuesday (from New Orleans, where wife Judith Owen is recording her next ablum) and here's what he had to say about Dan, his years lampooning CBS News and Shearer's laugh-out-loud compilation CD of his best bits, "Dropping Anchors," which I can't recommend too highly, and what he thinks about the potential of new media after a year of writing for HuffingtonPost.com.

My roommate's dad recently unearthed an 8-track recording of Harry, Albert Brooks, and the rest of the "Credibility Gap" announcing the 1975 Rose Parade. He converted it to .mp3 form, and I have been listening to at off an on all week. Next time you and he have a chat, ask him if he has any interest in a copy of his KMET past.

Since Aaron's Friday column that may've sent you to this post didn't make it that clear, Harry Shearer's "Le Show" is heard on many more conventional radio stations than just KCRW--however, it isn't heard in Kansas City right now. A list of stations is at www.harryshearer.com and many of them stream from their web site. The show's also heard on Sirius' PRI channel.
And it does podcast, too.
