What you missed
KSHB-TV 41 pre-empted the first five minutes of Sunday’s Emmy broadcast for weather coverage in Kansas City. Here’s what the rest of the country saw.
Conan O’Brien is on a plane. He’s sipping Champagne and looking forward to his second go-round as Emmys host. He says confidently,
“What could possibly go wrong tonight?” — and then the airliner crashes.
Soon after, O’Brien is standing in the jungle with “Lost’s” Jorge
Garcia, looking down at a familiar portal hatch.
“Dude, you don’t want to go down there,” Garcia warns him.
O’Brien climbs in … and climbs out of a ceiling vent in a paper supply office in Scranton, Pa.
He asks the cast of “The Office” how he can get to the Emmys.
Michael (Steve Carell), in that aren’t-I-hilarious tone of his,
replies, “Practice!”
Next we see “24’s” Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) taking a phone call.
It’s Conan, wanting directions to the Emmys.
“How did you get this number?” she asks before patching another
caller in.
“Chloe, listen to me!” huffs Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). “I’m
on a hijacked subway car and I need you to get in touch with the president!”
“Look, there’s no time for chitchat,” interrupts O’Brien. “I also
want a reservation at a good Italian restaurant, West Hollywood, 10:30, 11-ish.”
“Get off the phone, idiot,” Rajskub says.
“Yeah, idiot,” O’Brien adds.
“I think she meant you,” Sutherland
says.
The Emmys host storms into a doctor’s office, and House (Hugh
Laurie) looks him over.
“Let’s see now … subject could be anemic, possibly albino … age
92 to 112 … emitting odor of burnt cheese … you are a woman, right?”
Then it really gets goofy, as a cartoon Conan runs into a certain
infamous “South Park”
episode and dashes into the same closet where Tom Cruise is hiding out.
Finally, the versatile O’Brien stumbles into a hidden-camera
sting parlor where “Dateline NBC’s” Chris Hansen exposes him as an online
predator (screen name “ConeBone69”) … just as the Emmys break through the
clouds and into Kansas City’s
airspace.
(By the time you read this, the entire sketch will probably be
posted on YouTube.com.)
