"3 Needles" (Showtime) opened in limited U.S. theatrical release on World AIDS Day, December 1. A multi-character affair not unlike "Syriana" or "Crash," the star-studded (Lucy Liu, Olympia Dukakis, Sandra Oh, Stockard Channing, Chlöe Sevigny) epic follows a a black market blood smuggler in China, an Canadian adult film star cheating on his blood tests, and a nun in South Africa called to care for a family of orphans. Why a sprawling complex approach to an issue that is frequently all too personal? Says writer/director Thom Fitzgerald, "I asked myself this question. Why at a time when all of mankind has a common enemy in the AIDS virus has it not brought us together in order to fight it? The answer I discovered along the path of writing the movie is that the enemy is unrecognizable from country to country, from culture to culture."
