What to watch this week

Which cable network is putting on the Westminster of cat shows? Which founding father submits to a paternity test on daytime TV?

All times Central.

SUNDAY
It’s not the Westminster Dog Show, it’s “Cat-Minster,” airing 6 p.m. tonight on GSN (it’s on digital cable). This low-budget special hopes to stand under the halo created by the prestigious canine exhibition in a 90-minute special taped last year at the nation’s big feline show in San Mateo, Calif. (though hosts Bob Goen of “ET” and Marianne Curan keep calling it “San Francisco”).

TUESDAY
We in the Star newsroom are thinking a lot more about the disease ALS ever since one of our own, Greg Reeves, announced last month that he’s retiring from the paper (and wildly popular KC Crime Scene blog) because of ALS. A special “Frontline” on Tuesday (8 p.m., KCPT and KTWU) tells the story of two brothers, one with ALS, the other who quits his job to start a foundation committed to finding a cure for the nerve-wasting disease — and find it fast. For Kansas viewers, KTWU follows at 9:30 with an episode of “Health Sense” devoted to ALS.

THURSDAY
“30 Rock” is back, as NBC tries to super-size, or at least medium-size, the ratings for its low-rated sitcoms by giving them extra-long episodes. Kansas City’s own Jason Sudeikis guest stars as a co-worker that Liz (Tina Fey) falls for. Will Arnett also guest stars as a rival who wants Jack’s (Alec Baldwin) job. The highlight for me was the scene where Thomas Jefferson (also Alec Baldwin) flips off the studio audience of “Maury.” It’s better if I don’t explain.

WEEKEND
Two old movies of note: “The Sound of Music” makes the move to cable TV when it airs at 6 p.m. Friday on ABC Family. And if you can’t make it to Washburn University for the second annual “Godzilla and Friends” moviefest this weekend, catch 1967’s “Gappa, the Triphibean Monster” at 10:30 p.m. Saturday on KTWU. This will be the U.S. version, which was reedited and retitled “Monster from a Prehistoric Planet.”
