June is Gay Pride Month (which Charles Nelson Reilly seems to have chosen to skip this year), and it's being celebrated by the programmers at Turner Classic Movies by fleshing out Richard Barrios' book "Screened Out: Gay Images in Film." Kicking things off are the effeminate "Algie, the Miner" (1912) and his adventures out West; Johnny Arthur minces in "The Monster" (1925, 8:30); gay priss Franklin Pangborn attempts to "Exit Smiling" (1926, 10:15); Drew Demarest gives the straight guys a queer eye as a fashion designer for "The Broadway Melody" (1929, 11:45); William Haines almost comes way out "Way Out West" (1930, 1:45 a.m.); Blanche Friderici is a tough dame in "The Office Wife" (1930, 3); and Jay Eaton is a flamboyant dance instructor helping "Stage Mother" (1933) torture her little JonBenét (4:15).
Why did Constantinople get the works? That's nobody's business but the Turks on "Cities of the Underworld" (History; see also 9).

Petula Clark wasn't kidding about the subways in New York, as "Cities of the Underworld" (History) notes.

"Park City: Where Music Meets Film" (WE)
"Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" (Food): "Local Legends"
