Charles Gibson is in Kansas City today and tomorrow to anchor the ABC World News and to attend the grand opening celebration for KMBC-TV. That's the local affiliate that carries his newscast here. KMBC just opened new studios near Swope Park and is the first station in the market to do the news in high definition. In this interview, we talked about one of his earliest memories in TV, in Lynchburg, Virginia in the late 1960s, and his interactions, or lack thereof, with Lynchburg's best known citizen, the late Rev. Jerry Falwell. We also discussed the news ratings race, which has seen Gibson unexpectedly vaulted into first place, and in light of Katie Couric's controversial trip to Iraq, I asked Gibson why he is the only network news anchor not to venture over there.
