"The problem with documentaries is they're made by liberals, FOR liberals"
Brett Morgen's stylish adaptation of Robert Evans' memoir, "The Kid Stays in the Picture," announced him as an important young nonfiction filmmaker. He also made the Sundance series "Nimrod Nation," based on the popular ESPN commercials. Now, Morgen has directed an amazing new account of the 1968 Chicago police riot called "Chicago 10." It kicks off the PBS series "Independent Lens" this week. (Here's my review.) I spoke this summer with Morgen at TV critics' tour and he explained to me why he doesn't like documentaries, considers himself the polar opposite of Ken Burns, and who he's trying to reach with his film.
