I've got a story about "The Mentalist" for next week, and in the course of writing it, found a funny item from my notes. A bunch of us TV critics were milling around the show's set on the WB lot when one person opened a desk drawer and found the following, written in pen on a Pink Post-It note:
THAT'S HOW THEY GOT KEIFER (sic) SUTHERLAND
None of us knew what it meant. It was in a desk that you actually don't see too much on the show, because it's at the far end of the room from the metal table over by the couch, where the crime-fighters usually have their groupthink conversations. So I couldn't even figure out which dick the desk belonged to.
But this really didn't have anything to do with the characters. Someone in the cast or crew wrote that. What, then, did it mean?
As it happened, later that day I was on the Fox lot with Liz Craft and Sarah Fain, the two Kansas City women who are a writing team and about whom I've written plenty. They asked where else I'd been that day and I told them about "The Mentalist" set and this funny little note someone had found.
"Oh," said Liz, immediately figuring it out. "Someone must have been drinking too much."
Of course! I even wrote about it!
