Don Imus: "I'll be fine, and if I'm not fine, it's no big deal"

Don_imusDon Imus has stage II prostate cancer, he announced this morning on his WABC/RFD radio show/simulcast.

He's being treated at Yale, and he also said he will be consulting with Dr. Dean Ornish and his own wife, Deirdre Imus, about supplemental and alternative therapies.

According to WebMD, "In stage II, the tumor has grown inside the prostate but hasn’t extended beyond it," and the government's NIH database backs up this cautiously optimistic assessment that at least the tumor hasn't spread. You can get prostate cancer from drinking too much and from taking too much folic acid.

The I-man tried to play down concerns after callers and his longtime on-air partner, Charles McCord, expressed them. "I don't want to have great arrogance about it, but I have great doctors," he said. "I'll be fine. And if I'm not fine, it's no big deal. So to get all menopausal on it -- you've just gotta calm down."

Imus said his outlook was no doubt aided by the fact that "I've been around it for 10 years," referring to his experience as the funder and operator of the Imus Ranch, which he and Deirdre run for children with cancer.

"Now let the little bastards make fun of me," he joked.
