What's working for me this week....
1. The "Friday Night Lights" deal. Look on in envy, "Sports Night," "EZ Streets," "Freaks and Geeks" and every other low-rated drama that came and went before DirecTV got into the save-our-show business. "FNL's" final two-year extension ensures it will go out on its own terms.
2. "Thrilla in Manila." A chilling new documentary, airing Saturday on HBO, exposes the final Ali-Frazier battle as a desperate, hateful near-death experience.
3. The sound of Jon Miller's voice. The Royals were snowed out on Opening Day, but I still knew spring had arrived when I heard baseball's best announcer on ESPN.
... AND WHAT'S NOT
1. The sound of Joe Morgan's voice. ESPN wasn't quite ready to take the advice of the Fire Joe Morgan blog, but did shoehorn chatty third man Steve Phillips into the booth. The only thing worse than being fired is having a guy who is way better informed than you competing for the same oxygen.
2. KKFI woes. Whatever you think about its format or politics, you can't deny KC is lucky to have a free-standing 100,000-watt FM radio station. But for how much longer?
3. Twitter haters. So you can't say anything interesting in under 140 characters. But you want us to read a 700-word column telling us that.
