Limbaugh Karaoke: the first truly brilliant thing out of Jimmy Fallon's comedy shop
Though much attention is currently being focused on Conan O'Brien, it's really Jimmy Fallon who has the most to prove in NBC late night. After all, Conan has paid his dues, and has a 16-year head start when it comes to creating nightly comedy.
I've been waiting for the moment when I could report that Fallon had finally found a bit that broke through. "Slow Jamming the News" came close, but not quite. However, in yet another of the seemingly endless uses of Fallon's house band-slash-sidekicks The Roots, Fallon has struck comedy gold with "Rush Limbaugh Karaoke," a bit that combines off-key audience members, damning (if out-of-context) excerpts from actual Rush Limbaugh monologues and, of course, hilariously incongruent karaoke backgrounds. Here's one featuring a contestant named Aaron "Shumpy" White. Enjoy:
My only critique? Fallon needs to banter with the contestants less. If he's trying to improve his conversational skills, let him practice on his own time.
