T-Pain appearing in live-action ATHF May 31

So you may know that "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" did a live-action episode. You may know it's airing May 31 on Adult Swim. You may even know that Adult Swim acquired the rights to a whole bunches o' live-action episodes from Mr. Ricky Gervais. And if you are part of a very select group of TVB readers, you may even even know what it looks like inside Adult Swim's Williams St. office lair.

But here's something I'll bet you didn't know ...

Adult Swim’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force Debuts First-Ever Live-Action Episode, Starring T-Pain and Jon Benjamin

New Season of Popular Adult Swim Series to Conclude with Live-Action Episode

BK-Sponsored Search Discovers Carl Look-A-Like to Round Out Cast

After more than 80 animated episodes of the Adult Swim hit Aqua Teen Hunger Force, creators Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis have developed the first-ever live-action episode. To mark the occasion, they turned to none-other-than Grammy-winning southern soulster and rapper T-Pain to portray the Aqua Teen’s only sane and rational roommate Frylock, whose animated form looks much like a floating box of French fries. Starring as the Aqua Teen’s self-appointed leader Master Shake will be actor Jon Benjamin. The lovable and remarkably stupid Meatwad will be live as well but bare a striking resemblance to an exercise ball, and first-time television actor Dave Long Jr. has been tapped to play the Aqua Teen’s obnoxious neighbor Carl after a lengthy nationwide search. The new season of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, which continues throughout May on Sunday nights, will conclude with this first-ever live-action episode on Sunday, May 31 at 11:45 p.m. (ET/PT).

Grammy-winning singer-song-writer-producer—and actor—T-Pain burst on the music scene in 2005 and has produced and written a plethora of chart-topping and platinum-selling singles. In addition to the Grammy, T-Pain has garnered “Songwriter of the Year” and “Producer of the Year” honors at the BMI Urban Awards and earned a BET Award. His self-produced third album, THR33 RINGZ, was released last November, debuting at #4 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart.

Jon Benjamin is a writer, producer, actor and prolific voice-over actor from Boston, Mass. In addition to writing for Late Night with Conan O’Brien and acting in such television series as Sex and the City and Human Giant, Benjamin has done numerous voice-overs for such animated hits as Family Guy, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Assy McGee and Home Movies.

For this first-ever live-action episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Adult Swim embarked on a BK-sponsored, nationwide search for someone to play the character of Carl. The task was daunting: find someone who possesses similar traits to the animated Carl, a simple man who’s endearingly sweaty, hairy, lewd, fashion-challenged, horny, nasty and oftentimes annoying. After sifting through more than one hundred audition tapes, the real-life Carl was found: 23-year-old Dave Long Jr. from Edensburg, Pa.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is created by Matt Maiellaro (12 oz. Mouse) and Dave Willis (Squidbillies) and follows the strange everyday lives of three human-sized food products living in New Jersey.

Adult Swim (AdultSwim.com), launched in 2001, is Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.’s network offering original and acquired animated and live-action series for young adults. Airing nightly from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. (ET, PT), Adult Swim shares channel space with Cartoon Network, home to the best in original, acquired and classic entertainment for youth and families, and is seen in 97 million U.S. homes.

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., a Time Warner company, creates and programs branded news, entertainment, animation and young adult media environments on television and other platforms for consumers around the world.

Society of Professional Journalists opposes Fairness Doctrine's return

Stick a fork in it already! Earlier, I debated nostalgic liberal Steve Glorioso about the Fairness Doctrine.

SPJ opposes reinstatement of Fairness Doctrine

INDIANAPOLIS – The Society of Professional Journalists, celebrating 100 years of journalism and free speech advocacy, opposes reintroduction of the Fairness Doctrine, which would allow the government to control broadcast editorial content.

“SPJ in general opposes government intervention on speech. The Fairness Doctrine does that and discussion about having it again should end,” said SPJ President Dave Aeikens. “The SPJ Code of Ethics requires fairness in news coverage, but we don’t want the government to mandate that.”

Although no bill has been formally introduced in Congress to mandate the doctrine or otherwise change Federal Communications Commission rules, its reinstatement after a 22-year hiatus has been discussed frequently in recent months. Some members of Congress, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have indicated support for the Fairness Doctrine. President Obama, however, has stated he does not favor its return.

The history of the doctrine and its use by the FCC began in 1949, when broadcasting regulations first stipulated attention to both sides of a controversial issue. However, the original policy did not require equal airtime. The largely informal policy was officially codified in FCC regulations in 1967 and unsuccessfully challenged by Supreme Court cases in 1969 (Red Lion Broadcasting v FCC) and 1984 (FCC v League of Women Voters of California). Without judicial or legislative intervention, the FCC repealed the doctrine in 1987.

SPJ believes firmly that just as government has no business regulating words printed in a newspaper, the public good is not served by mandating how to broadcast news or opinions on radio or television.

Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press. For more information about SPJ, please visit http://www.spj.org.
