Protect food stamps

As the country’s poverty rate rises and organizations like Harvesters (Kansas City’s only food bank) struggle, the food stamp program is critical in order to make sure that all children have a healthy start in life. More than 80 percent of the families that receive food stamps have children.

Senate Republicans have dropped back from making major cuts in this program. But now House Republicans have their eye on food stamps as a possible place to cut funding.

Congress needs to focus more on making sure that all Americans’ basic need for adequate, nutritious food is met.

I love it when I go to the store and see these "poor" single moms wearing bling, talking on cell phones and their kids wearing Air Jordans and Tommy.
Yep, they need foodstamps.

Or these single mom types could make the CHOICE to work, stay married and quite blaming the fathers all the time.
Funny how fathers are not allowed by law to provide but must fork over the cash or go to debtors prison. Sounds more like a Ponzi scheme.

JD- I'm refering to a story I heard on the morning news (980) a few weeks ago. The story was lementing the lack of applicants for the food stamp program (as if that's a bad thing) and predicted there would be ads placed in the near future in the hopes of drumming up business- so to speak. I, for one, have heard these ads.

The point is- no one would propose lopping tens of thousands of people off of food stamps. It would be political suicide.

"From what I've heard, the reason cuts are being proposed is because there is a surplus."

I find it hard to believe there's a surplus in ANY government program.

JUNGLEJACK, you got a link to that? or is this one of those "urban legends"?

From what I've heard, the reason cuts are being proposed is because there is a surplus. Should the budget increase if fewer people are applying for assistance? I'll bet not one person who qualifies for food stamps will ever be denied because of budget cuts.

I think that Judy Perry is correct here. It is shameful that the republicans are looking to make cuts here. While I generally believe that it should be up to the state to subsidize the poor, under the current system, only the federal government has the resources to do this.
