The success of the fund drive for the Metropolitan Performing Arts Center is essential for the cultural life, economy and image of our community. Sports facilities are great, but we need a balance — and culture has been left behind for too long.

The beautifully conceived arts center would be a wonderful entrance to downtown. It would bridge the gap with the Crossroads, Union Station, Crown Center and points beyond. An August groundbreaking would be cause for an awesome celebration for the entire metropolitan area.

I see a tie-in between the success of the arts center effort and the proposed publicly subsidized upgrades of the Truman Sports Center. Though I support upgrades in exchange for long-term leases, I will probably drop such backing if the community is not successful in moving forward with the Performing Arts Center. The Chiefs and Royals could show support for a balanced community by becoming major contributors to the Arts Center.

If the Chiefs and Royals have money to throw around, it better damn well be put into their own stadiums.

Maybe we could have a pat on the fanny tax for the football players to pay. Every time one of them pats a teammate on the fanny, $10 goes into a ballet fund.
