After 42 years of marriage, it probably won’t come as a surprise that I occasionally disagree with my husband, Kansas City Councilman Bill Skaggs. And even though I love and admire him beyond any Valentine’s expectation (we were married on Valentine’s Day 1964), he is off base when it comes to art (2/9, A-1, “Let the art debate start”).
I happen to love the sculptures at the airport, the “hair curlers” on Bartle Hall and the huge shuttlecocks at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. I find all of these pieces refreshing and imaginative, and can’t wait to see what we will use to adorn the new arena.
Of course, Da Vinci, Rembrandt and Renoir all had their detractors. So I guess in some respects Bill is carrying on the tradition of the traditionalists by calling the airport art “junk.”
He and I do agree that Kansas Citians were wise to choose to support art in its many forms, as it lifts us from the tedium of our everyday challenges and transports to a more joyful place.
I assure you Bill and I will be further exploring this notion of “art.” Thanks for an interesting article.
