McCaskill met son in Iraq

I recently received a personal phone call from U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill saying she had seen my son while visiting Iraq. She wanted to tell my wife and me that he was doing well, and to thank us for our sacrifices as parents. She then forwarded pictures her aide had taken during the visit.

Now, I am not so naive as to be unaware there was a PR benefit to all of this (the trip, the phone call, the pictures and e-mail address for future fundraising efforts). But I must be equally fair to specify that she took the time to make the phone call herself, not delegating the job to an aide. I would also note that she took the time to visit Iraq, learning firsthand, as opposed to relying on staffers and reports.

I did not vote for the senator and probably will not do so in the future — our political views are too dissimilar. However, she has earned a great deal of respect from me. It is not my intent to argue for or against her election, but I do believe it is my place to publicize a private action that I find commendable.

I too have great respect for McCaskill. I suspect she's the only person in either branch of congress who stands up against earmarks. She also seems to vote what she believes and then tells people why. I wish more would do the same.

I am not big on McCaskill either, simply because she is:
A) a lawyer by trade
B) a politician
C) anti-male
I would have to say that at least you got a call, you'd never get that call from GW, Limbaugh or Deferment Dick Cheney
