It appeared it was politics as usual with Overland Park flexing its political muscles. But the Johnson County commissioners have restored my faith in our elected officials.
Friday’s Star reported the possible abandonment the South Metro Connector in southeast Johnson County (11/16, Local, “Green space offer floated; The plan calls for preserving acreage in exchange for ending the study of a proposed road”).
But what also made me happy was the quote by Chairwoman Annabeth Surbaugh, saying, “People like to think government is fixed and what they say doesn’t matter. I don’t see how people in the south metro area can now think that at this point. They spoke and they were heard.”
Many of the same people in southern Johnson County have also spoken out about the unfair and unwanted annexation of southern Johnson County by Overland Park. The affected people have no legal vote in the matter.
I implore the voting commissioners to do the right thing here also. Don’t put yourselves in a position where the political interests of Overland Park can influence the majority of the voting commissioners, especially when only one commissioner represents the affected people.
Be consistent. Listen to the people. Say no to Overland Park’s greed.
