Bannister Mall area

Is in response to Steve Penn’s column (1/22, Local, “And the walls could come tumbling down”). Richard Tolbert must not be a long-time resident of south KC. I’ve been a resident in the area for that last seven years, but I was a patron long before the area declined and closed. It was a convenient drop-off point on the weekends and an easy ride on the bus from my hood to hang out, see a movie and shop.

Now I must admit that I never stole, fought or was chased by mall security (I can’t speak for everyone I was with) but I do remember the area became a haven for violent and vociferous behavior. Being robbed or beat up was common.

Fast-forward to 2008. To use my own biblical reference, do south Kansas Citians really want to wander in the economic wilderness like the children of Israel for 40 years, because when the Lord opened the door for something new and better they wanted to hold on to the dilapidated comfort of Egypt, i.e. Bannister Mall? I think not!

A community flowing with milk and honey awaits. “Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it” (Numbers 13:30).
