Free to live American dream

Chuck Hiechoek (4/9, Letters) laments the American way of life as a society based on greed and blames the American dream for inspiring citizens to spend beyond their means in order to impress others.

I believe Mr. Hiechoek has confused the American dream with “keeping up with the Joneses.” The American dream, as I understand it, simply purports that any American citizen has the potential to succeed and the freedom to pursue a way of life to his or her liking, unfettered by any government interference or limitations.

In essence, Mr. Hiechoek seems to be in favor of less freedom. I’ll take the American Dream any day.
