Limbaugh is ‘oasis of sanity’

William R. Lenz (7/9, Letters) is appalled at Rush Limbaugh’s big new contract (7/3, A-6, “Limbaugh signs $400 million deal.”)

Typical of the left, he demagogically demonizes responsible opposing points of view as continuing to “poison the political discourse with hate speech.” How dare such a person achieve wealth in the free marketplace!

Rush Limbaugh is successful because he provides an oasis of sanity — an appealing alternative to the almost monolithic liberal bias of the mass media and its leftist allies from the two worlds of make-believe, academia and Hollywood.

Face it. When conservatives hit it big, Trotskyites gnash their teeth.

Don't bother me with this nonsense. If you believe what you posted, you could have saved all that time you claim to have spent in "Universities" and gone to work as a sincere person who reads lots of books, in no particular order. I shudder to think that the surgeon to whom I go for a triple bypass might have flunked Aortas 203; however, I think I'll take my chances with the board-certified heart specialist than with a witch doctor.
But REFUTE what Rush Limbaugh says? HE HAS NO STANDING UPON WHICH TO CLAIM CREDIBILITY. Why argue paradise with pigs?
Finally, you've once again tied your own tail in a knot. If Rush Limbaugh's dimwitted audience has lots of education, you state that education doesn't mean anything, I conclude that his audience has no powers of analysis greater than the R.O.W.
I promised myself after that nonsense about nominal data the other night I wasn't going to come on these boards and tutor sophomores. I leave to clean grout, an infinitely more rewarding occupation.

One of my points is that knowledge is not always gained through formal education. Another, which has been presented on this blog many times, is that graduation from a highly respected University, even with an advanced degree, does not guarantee competence. However, my main point is that you do not refute Rush by making personal attacks on him. Based on education and success in life, it would appear that Rush's listeners are more capable of evaluating his statements than is the average citizen. If we all got to silence those with whom we do not agree and whom we believed to be incompetent, after I got through there would be long periods of silence on NPR.

Thank you, you make this so easy.
Take away your training in the universities (no cap, please) and your experience in the field. Completely replace both with at best a dilettante's knowledge gained by random reading of textbooks and Popular Science.

Would YOU hire YOU?

What does it matter? What if your commission was to engineer a bridge?

If I found out you were a poseur, would you tell me to sit down and shut up, because I have the right to choose to use another bridge?

Sorry, that's pure sophistry. Let's turn the dials all the way to the ri... to one end of the scale. There's some extreme speech that would cause you to protest, in whatever forum you could. Please don't tell me that if NAMBLA held a convention in Bartle Hall, with live coverage from local news, you'd shake your head sadly and move on. Make up whatever outlandish example you care to: telethons for the support of kindergarten arson, infomercials for books on drowning as an acceptable method of retroactive birth control, handbooks from Little Golden Books on how to mix nitrogen triodide for preschoolers.
So let's agree that there's SOME imaginable speech out there that would cause you to at least write a letter to the editor, much less pick up a torch and a rope.
In Rush Limbaugh's case, he could influence an election (and has bragged about doing so). He could persuade young men that dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, without revealing his own cowardice. Or he could simply make public statements so base as to shame those who DON'T protest--Cindy Sheehan lost her son, well, everybody loses things.
Perhaps you don't feel that his brand of 'entertainment' falls into the realm of the offensive, and that you can just turn the channel if you don't agree. Examine what pushes YOUR buttons, though--what speech would cause YOU to waste your time on a blog?

You seem confused about the meanings of formal education, knowledge and intelligence. I learned a great deal about engineering at the various Universities from which I graduated. However I acquired far more knowledge about engineering during the practice of my profession. In competition I also learned that the University from which one graduated, no matter how respected, did not guarantee a high level of ability. As to Rush's listeners, I linked studies on this blog some time ago showing that the listeners to "call in talk radio" are better educated and more affluent than the average citizen. But if you don't agree with what Rush says it seems the intelligent course would be either to ignore it or refute it, not to make a personal attack that has nothing to do with the substance of the arguments.

No. Not that I never had the opportunity to take advantage of their "services" in my younger days but of all the souvenirs I wanted to take home, a STD was not one of them.

And then there's that clingy right/wrong concern thing that always hovered over my head, pushing me to behave like a monk. It didn't help my reputation that I didn't drink or use dope either. Just an ol' stick in the mud and no fun at all.

Not that I didn't "observe" the action though. It was always fun to watch the Baptists and Mennonites let loose. You'd think they never got any unless they paid for it. Well, maybe they didn't.

Pub,

You seem to be trying REALLY hard to avoid the obvious. Cosmetologists, like almost every other profession that requires licensure, requires x hours of training as an assurance that the trainee is fully aware of the proper procedures required to safeguard public safety. If you think that licensure based upon the notion of protecting "public health, safety, and welfare" in any way relates to Rush talking on the radio, I think we're done here.

And to answer your question "Would you sit quietly for..." the answer is easy. No, I simply wouldn't listen. If I find someone's speech on something to be hypocritical, I quit listening. If others don't quit listening, so be it. We're all entitled to our own opinion. It's as easy as that. The funny little dial on your radio enables you to change station.

No, whispering hangs out with Republican congressmen.

You seem to claim a great deal of knowledge about brothels and their clientele. Personal experience?

Which makes O'Reilly's make-it-up-as-you-go-along blather even worse. He KNOWS how to get at the truth, and chooses to go low. And, as ever, if he's such a tough guy and such a patriot, whyohwhy didn't he sign up and show us loony libs how a REAL man acts?

'S OK, he's going to never live down the loofah thing.

Yeah, keep it strai--wrong word, keep it REAL, yeah, that's it. The Moob with Teeth was the one coming out of the Dominican Republic with a partial bottle of Viagra, which is analogous to coming out of a men's room in an airport with an empty stand-up shopping bag tucked under your arm.

Chris, I'm DYING to know how you figure I'm a man. Kate, you never called me back--coffee?

whispering_to_kc

Oops. I'm sorry.

I'm getting my wacky righties mixed up. This is the Rush "family values pillpopper" Limbaugh thread. I should have saved the airport bathroom remark for the "Larry" thread.

whispering_to_kc

C40 and el Rushbo.

Sittin' in a tree.

K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

Too bad you two can't find a little something in the airport bathroom like the rest of those wacky righties.

"Pube loves El Rushbo almost as much as Whispering blames 9/11 on the Mossad."

"Somehow these two facts are related in the warped world of wacky lefties."

You got some pretty wacky perceptions yourself, Chris.

Chris40

Pube has a larger Rush Crush than I've seen in quite a while. It's similar to Olberman's man crush on O'Reilly. He just can't stop talking about it, and he won't change the subject.

Somehow these two facts are related in the warped world of wacky lefties.

Pub 17:

You make a good point but, once again, no one is making you listen or watch.

At least O'Reilly has experience as a hands on journalist and has taken the time to get a formal education. Hannity on the other hand is a frat boy drop out who partied to much on mommy and daddy's dime so his credibility is right up there with Limbuagh's. My cat is more qualified to comment on foriegn policy as those two clowns.

Give Powell, Rice or Petraeus a talk show and I'm all ears. As for other guys, Clear Channel will just need to try a little harder for my listening time.

Kate

Pub, no one’s asking you to sit idly, but your cursing of the darkness has gotten you nowhere. It’s time to light a candle.

whispering_to_kc

Of course, for 50 bucks el Rushbo won't be getting a "girl" from the A list but when ya need a littl' luvin', any port in a storm?

At least in the state of Kansas, cosmetologists are required to have x hours of formal training to get their license.

Here's what I find actively offensive about Rush Limbaugh and the whole cadre of right-wing talking heads:
Would you sit quietly for Ted Kennedy coming on TV and lecturing us about temperance?
Would you sit quietly for Bill Clinton coming on TV and lecturing us about marital fidelity?
Would you sit quietly for Michael Moore coming on TV and lecturing us about the need for calm, scholarly, and well-supported debate on public issues?
Yes? No?
If no, then why would you sit quietly why Rush, Michael Savage, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, et al., sit in front of cameras and mikes playing the chickenhawk?
