I’m amazed at the incredible ignorance of so many letter writers regarding bicycling. The bicycle is the world’s most perfect form of transportation: It’s fun, clean, healthy and incredibly inexpensive. It’s very efficient too, especially for the urbanite. For instance, in Kansas City, it’s only a half-hour ride from downtown to Waldo (when you’re in shape). The bicyclist gets much more exercise than those who sit and drive.
The city of Denver (my hometown), actually encourages people to bicycle. Maybe that’s partly why Denver has a reputation for being a fun city. That’s one of the reasons Coloradoans are the leanest people in the U.S. Kansans and Missourians are among the fattest.
Bicycling is patriotic. Unlike the motorist, the bicyclist isn’t pumping dollars into the economies of Iran, Russia and Venezuela.
Bicycling is good for your heart, pocketbook and the environment. Shed those excess pounds, and manage stress without drugs.
Let’s create safe bicycling routes for commuters in Kansas City.

Kansas City

Tracee, move back to the land of fruit and nuts then. Go ahead and pay exorbatant prices for housing, ridiculous taxes, and if you select Los Angeles, you can enjoy the #1 polluted city in the country.
Let's see, we have nice whether about 6-8 months a year and the average commute is probably around 15-20 miles one way to work in the Metro. Many working either DT or in Johnson County. Who would be willing to ride their bikes in 20 degree weather?

Is it just me, or all the bicycle riders just like Vegans, constantly whinning and demanding the rest of us behave exactly like they do?
Look you all want to go back to sixth grade and hop on your Schwinn, be my guest. Personally I am goint to set on my butt in my air conditioned SUV while smoking a good stogie, and sipping on my favorite beverage. I will, when I get to the ramp, jump out and prepare my boat for launch.
You all just keep on pushing those pedals...

Good morning Tracee,
Do you wear one of those funny helmets and spandex? I get a huge kick out of them.
I see your point. I was in NYC recently and noticed the lanes for bike traffic. If a motorist hits someone in the bike lane he is in for big trouble. If a biker rides in traffic like he's got bumpers he is at his own risk. I've driven in parts of the metro at times when bikers are behaving in the road like geese.
Mutual respect shouldn't be that hard of a concept.

Here in Topeka, you take your life in your hands when you attempt to bicycle. The streets are narrow, full of potholes, with no repairs in sight. The driving public here seem truly offended when they see a cyclist riding in the street, alongside traffic as the law requires. They get really upset!
In Ca, where I grew up, there are bike lanes on most major streets, to encourage cycling. There are even--gasp!--sidewalks to encourage safe walking! Until/unless the dummies who run this town open up their eyes, it will always be extremely hazardous to ride in Topeka.
