Smaller restaurant portions, please

Restaurants are looking for ways to cope with rising costs (7/22, Business, “Prices boiling for restaurants; As food and fuel costs rise, local eateries are making adjustments with their diners in mind”). One idea mentioned was reducing portion size. What a clever, innovative idea!

If restaurants served proper serving sizes dictated by the FDA’s food pyramid:.

One wouldn’t have to compromise on what to order with a dining guest, because they could each order their own item.

The diner wouldn’t feel guilty about eating every morsel on the plate.

The diner would leave the restaurant feeling comfortable instead of miserable.

Those who now eat at restaurants routinely might lose weight.

The restaurants would discard less food.

More people may gladly walk through their doors.

And, of course, the bill might be cheaper.

I could care less whether she "cleans her plate", takes the rest home to eat later, or leaves it for the restaurant to throw away.

Unless you're advocating government intervention to legislate considerate behavior, you need to get used to dealing with people who you feel don't live up to your standards.

They must not have take-home boxes in Leawood.

Try taking the oversized portion home and eating it later. Just because they put 3 lbs of food in front of you doesn't mean you have to shove it all down.

If restuarants want to reduce cost, try turning off the air conditioning for awhile. I normally change from shorts to pants and put on socks upon going out to eat because I know the restuarnt will be kept unnecessarily cold....in the summer.

Might I suggest to Ms. Klaassen that if she has problems with restaurants that serve large portions, she doesn't patronize them.

See how easy that was? No need to impose your will on others. No need for more government regulation. Vote with your dollars and leave the rest of us alone to do the same.

Cherry,

Leave my plate alone, its not your business.
