Start drilling, stop draining

I agree with Russell Means (8/24, Letters). One of the biggest things plaguing the people of this country is the oil “crisis.” However, I guess I fail to see the oil “crisis.” We have enough oil reserves off of our own coasts to last Americans for several years. Why not start drilling the oil and stop draining the pockets of millions of Americans to benefit the booming oil companies?

Somehow it doesn’t seem fair that the oil companies seem to be making a considerable sum of money while most people have to make huge cutbacks in their lives to accommodate the greediness of a few people.

And why don’t politicians finally step up and start saying what they feel about the situation and stop skating around the issue?

Rogue,

I'm talking about oil we have set aside for certain allies. You'll find those to be quite considerable with guarantees of continued supply.

as long as we're talking big picture lets talk big picture.

As always I'm for lets drill it all as God ain't makin' any more of it, and it will all be used eventually. Lets concentrate on a solid replacement strategy for when its gone.

We export products made from oil to a pretty good tune, but our crude stays here or goes to Canada for refinning.

Strategic reserves would last about thirty days in an emergency, you think that is enough Sol?

Qustion for you Rogue, as it seems people here have disputed that statement of yours in past threads: How much does it cost the US economy to sustain the Strategic Reserves that we are obligated by treaty with certain countries? i am not picking on them, so I won't name them, I just want you to justify them.

Rogue

American oil companies do not export, save about one day's of US production to Puerto Rico, a US territory.

I find it disturbing that some folks truly believe that oil companies only make money from US sales.

Define considerable.
So you are saying some companies and government can make all they want but oil and energy companies have to be capped on earnings? Apparently you have not looked at very many financial statements of these oil and energy companies. The employees of these companies and the sub contractors that support the infrastructure (welders, pipefitters, steel and iron workers, boilermakers, adminsitrative, etc) benefit from the tens of thousands of good paying jobs and benefits these companies offer.
Maybe the politicians should step in and start making people stop living above their means, stop spending frivolously, stop consuming.
Lower prices on a commodity typically increases consumption. In addition to that, gasoline is not the only product being consumed based from crude oil. Your tires, the make up your wife and Nancy pelosi wear, the private jets Obama and P Diddy fly around in talking baout greed, etc. all contribute to the massive consumption problem couple with lack of refining capacity. The oil reserves are for safety, kind of like an oil Social Security.
