When chickens shoot wolves

Like most Americans I was surprised by Sen. McCain’s choice of running mate. I can only guess his reasons to ask Gov. Palin may be an infusion of fresh blood and equality on the ticket. At first blush, Palin looks like the perfect choice to appeal to sportsmen and women. She is from the beautiful wild state of Alaska and fancies herself as an outdoors person. I would love to enjoy the outdoor sports in her state, as I have hunted and fished all my adult life. However, Palin very recently helped defeat a moratorium to halt hunting by airplane. Using small aircraft people locate game — most often wolves — then run the animal to exhaustion or fly low enough to shoot from the plane, most often wounding the animal.

When the animal is no longer able to move, the plane lands and the shooter kills the wounded or exhausted animal. This is not sportsmanship. These tactics are unethical and barbaric, even more so than cock fighting. At least in a cockfight the chickens are on equal ground. In this distasteful method of killing, the chickens stay in a plane. Therefore, I question Palin’s fairness and fresh blood considering her endorsement of such an unfair blood sport.

BTW: Seems to me momma earth managed to control animal populations extremely well right up until we started helping her. - jack

The same can be said for climate and natural evolution of the earth. Seems Muthanatcha hold her own just fine over millions of years regardless of the half convenient truths told by some lawyers.

Engineer,

I don't think we disagree on the basics here.

Hey, it was a joke. The wolves kill the old and the sick and make the herd smarter and faster. Alcohol kills the weak and sick brain dells and that's why, after a couple of beers, you feel so much smarter and faster.

A determination was made by people expert in the matter that the wolf population was growing out of control. I don't think the letter writer or anyone on this thread has any more knowledge than that about the situation. The Moose and Caribou population is of economic importance to the State. They are important both as a food source for the native people and as an attraction for out of State hunters. These out of State hunters are very important to the economy of Alaska. Although the idea of "aircraft hunting' is not attractive to me, I can understand the reasoning that calls for control of the wolf population.

eng: Most Natiive American cultures had the same myth around whichever animal was most important to them.

I'm sure any study would show that there is a reasonable standard that a community(of wolves)of any type needs to sustaian a standard of living. I wonder if wolves that just want the standard of living expected by other species are considered "species hustlers"....

You guys are so funny.

....so, kill the wof by helicopter hunting, trapping or any other means....keep the moose and caribou populations low so the wolves can't sustain their numbers....
.. no matter what, kill the wolf...

Have I stated your position well?

sounds a little like the "Buffalo' theory on Cheers. Seriously, there is no natural control for the wolf population except for the scarcity of food. For food to be scarce, Moose and Caribou have to be scarce. On that basis it would seem advisable to control the wolf population.

Actually, the answer I was looking for was, "They're composed of cheering, enthusiastic people engaged in a great common enterprise." Y'all SOOOO neg-a-tive!

BTW: In Eskimo tradition, the caribou heard was dieing and the people were straving. The people prayed to mother earth to save the caribou heard.

In answer to their prayers, mother earth gave them the wolf. The wolf took the old, sick and weak. The heard became strong again.

Sadly, our best heard management fails horribly in comparison to momma earths method. Hunter want the buggest and strongest. Government methods (including helicopter hunts) are indiscriminate.

Only rich NASCAR fans are welcome at the RNC. And the percentage of blacks is waaaay higher at a NASCAR race.

No, not at all. Most ants are brown, red, and black.

Kate, please never stop posting here. You always make it SOOOO easy.

They both look like ant colonies from Prof Pub’s ivory tower.

What do a NASCAR crowd shot and an RNC crowd shot have in common?

Woner what Rogue DID mean by Bamba? Well, he's watchin' a race today, he can go back to avoidin' race tomorrow.

I like headshots to control guys in V-10 F-350s. It's a tough shot to get, because state law prohibits taking them while they're filling up at QuikTrip.

Hunting other than for food or population control is not one of my personal favorites.
We need more government programs, research, think tanks and community activists to address this hunting issue. Implement say a hunting tax of $10,000 per year per hunter and $10,000 per head. I just came up with these numbers the same way Obama comes up with his, Yahtzee dice.

Sure-Sheffield was Boy, Darby Jones was Bomba. There was a dark era before I knew the wonders of imdb, but time has healed the scars and the pain returns only in those long dark nights of the soul.

Somebody has the material for a world-class joke a-buildin':

"Sarah Palin, Ted Nugent, and Dick Cheney go on a hunting trip..."
