In the past week, two “stray” cats have come to our door. They have no ID, but are well fed and friendly.
If you find that you can no longer keep your pets, please do not just abandon them. They will be killed on the highway or by a stronger animal, or they will just freeze to death. Take unwanted pets to your local animal shelter.
If you find a stray, try to bring them at least into your garage, and then call Animal Control.

Surely, there's a hospital somewhere in Nebraska that would take them!

Dog gone it. Every once in a while you post something that makes me think you aren't a total loss after all.

Who says a wandering animal is abaondoned? I don't have them anymore, but I used to have cats that would leave in the morning and come back at night. They weren't abandoned, just free wheeling.

"There is a special place in hell for anyone who would abandon an animal ..."
Indeed. I wonder if any of these people realize what fate awaits nearly all the pets they dump in rural areas. (Their destiny is to become "food".) I wonder if they'd care if they did realize it?
On the other hand, my dog and cat were both "dumped" and wandered in. "Thank you" to the idiots who dumped them anyway.

Animal Control will not take cats and often won't even take dogs. When I found a cat living under our deck last summer, we managed to catch it and get it into a carrier, only to discover the poor girl had been declawed. this was no feral -- this was a domesticated cat with no means of identification.
I wore myself out for two days and finally (miraculously) found a home for her. No agency or shelter or vet would take her. I was on my own to find her a home, and it was pure luck that I was able to.
There is a special place in hell for anyone who would abandon an animal, and also for pet owners who refuse top spay and neuter.

What is sad some local shelters will not take pets unless they are a danger at least that's what a hotel manager told me while in Wichita. A cute little kitty was outside the hotel, friendly as could be but the manager said the animal control would not pick it up and the shleter would not take if they took it themselves. If i had a carrier with me I would have taken the poor thing. As mean as I come off on this liberal blog, I am an animal advocate since they really can not go and pursue a job like the whiners should be doing.
