Spreading your wealth around

To all the recent letter writers complaining about the criticism of Barack Obama’s comments on “spreading the wealth:” You are not facing reality.

It is a straw man argument that seems to know the personal beliefs of those who are opposed to this kind of thinking: that we do not believe in taxes, we are not compassionate, we are rich, we approve of the recent bailout or we do not personally support the underprivileged.

Socialism is an economic system, but it is also a belief that we should have a society where power and wealth are distributed evenly by the government. Socialist governments require taxes even more onerous than we have.

I want to be able to give to charities that I deem worthy of my hard-earned dollars. I do not want the government deciding at what income level I have earned too much.

If you are interested in a candidate’s compassion, you might compare the charitable giving records of Obama and Joe Biden with those of John McCain and Sarah Palin. Forget the amounts; just look at the percentages.

When Obama speaks of spreading the wealth, he evidently did not mean his wealth, only yours.

"Nice try at changing the subject.'

Not changing the subject, but merely demonstrating Engineer's inconsistency. As to charity, I concern myself with only one family's charitable deeds and that family is certainly not the McCains.

Sorry Engineer,

type in "charitable donations McCain" and click on the one with Harpers in the address.

Not at all mean spirited on my part to post the link, but it shows most of the McCains charitable donations went to private schools their children attended.

"...people like the Clintons, the Obamas and Joe Biden keep adding evidence. With what they did before they thought people were watching, of course."

I read of a study indicating religious people give more. Finally I know why.

"As to evolution, when some one presents evidence on how it occurred between species, I'll buy it. Otherwise it's a theory that remains to be proven."

First of all, evolution is not "just a theory", it's a fact. On a small scale it can be demonstrated and traced in a lab. On a large scale you have transitional fossils. There is ample evidence of evolution as fact. All that's required is a little bit of intellectual curiosity.

"As to the cause of global warming, I opt for the sun."

When it comes to climate change, I opt for the consensus of experts who actually know what they're talking about.

"There is also the fact that the North American Continent has warmed very little."

Been to Canada lately? Climate change is *very* apparent. What used to melt in May now melts in early April. Glaciers are shrinking rapidly.

tomw - Nice try at changing the subject. That's much easier than presenting evidence that Engineer's 23rd Psalm is incorrect, isn't it? In the other topics, Engineer presents evidence or logical reasons to support his positions.

It's just one study but people like the Clintons, the Obamas and Joe Biden keep adding evidence. With what they did before they thought people were watching, of course. As to evolution, when some one presents evidence on how it occurred between species, I'll buy it. Otherwise it's a theory that remains to be proven. As to the cause of global warming, I opt for the sun. There are things hard to understand such as the very uneven distribution of the reported warming. There is also the fact that the North American Continent has warmed very little. On top of all this, we are now in a cooling cycle forecasted to last for various lengths,.

There was one notable study, Arthur Brooks of Syracuse University, on conservative charity and Engineer treats it as if it was the 23rd Psalm. The vast majority of paleontologists and evolutionary biologists are in agreement on evolution and Engineer has his doubts. Overwhelmingly, climate scientists find human responsibility for climate change, but Engineer finds fault with climate change studies. Always good to be selective.

Engineer,

Objects in the mirror may not reflect what they actually are.........

There have been studies demonstrating it: Conservatives are more generous with their own money, Liberals are more generous with other people's money.

"Gag me with a sweetometer again"-Rogue

Is that what you're calling them now?

solomon

Hey Boodywipe,

I made it a point to say it was not a swipe against your stimuli girl, I used her in the example as the lowest earner of the people the letter writer mentioned.

BTW, my grandfather, who was an old southern gentleman, would have considered you as the lowest wrung in the evolution of Americans.(you know...peckerwood) Oddly enough, he died in 1968, the year you claim idiotic racism ended. Yet you are still here.

Rogue

Gag me with a sweetometer again, how much longer for this Yomama love affair to last...wait let me answer that; about 18 mos to 2 years when most Americans wake up to how stupid they were.

Hey Race Card, just can't leave her alone can you? You are possessed.

solomon

I admire the McCains for their charitable contributions. It is ridiculous though to compare %s of income when one person in the group is wealthy beyond need.

Not at all a shot at her, but it would be interesting if someone could post the income % that Gov Palin gave, since the letter writer brought her into it. The Gov and her husband are raising a rather large family and if they are like the average Americans they are giving to their childrens future.
