Food for thought

Something to consider in this new year is the proliferation of television programs extolling the joys of eating vast quantities of food.

We’re offered programs about giant portions, eating contests and cruise lines offering more food to individuals each day than should probably be eaten in a week. As those cruise ships sail past some of the poorer nations, is any thought given to how some of the citizens there view us? Us, with food to throw away, and them, in many homes, with parents unable to provide sufficient food for babies and infants.

Don’t even get me started on appetizers. That’s food before we eat our food. What a concept! How much food does a person need to have presented to him or her at one meal? And doggie bags? What a brilliant way of showing the rest of humanity that we’re so well off, extravagant and insensitive that we can overindulge while a significant number of people are malnourished or starving.

Please take a moment to contemplate how this behavior of ours is a slap in the face to people around the world. This is a behavior that surely merits some examination and change.

Well, Kate, they are liberals and if you are not spending someone else's money you have got to be carefil.

Kate

. . . or with one who eats little, but recognizes a cheapskate.

"... that kind of attitude doesn’t get a guy a second date ..."

... with a fat girl.

....ooooh, my elitist prey...

Kate

Probably frowns on ordering anything other than the house wine, too . . .

solomon

ah Ha,

The way into Kate's heart.........

Kate

No appetizers, no desserts. I hope Mr. Hughes is married, because that kind of attitude doesn’t get a guy a second date.

The food programs are a nice bookend to the "magic colon cleanser" ads. Everyone is winning here, what's the problem?!

Why does Lew hate capitalism?

"Please take a moment to contemplate how this behavior of ours is a slap in the face to people around the world." OK, I will chew on that for a while.

Sol,

I was wondering where to start with this letter, then I read your comment, and alas, you said it perfectly.

solomon

Letters the last few days haven't been very interesting.

Lew Hughes,

A slap in the face to people around the world? Programs extolling the joys of eating vast quantities of food are somehow a threat, meriting change? Appetizers and doggie bags as a sign of the disdain we have for others, less fortunate?

Lew, I'd say you watch too much TV. I also would bet you'd vote for any and all smoking bans.
