Light pollution in theaters

Enjoying Cirque du Soleil recently at the Music Hall, I witnessed a wonderful thing. Early in the show, an usher approached an audience member and told him to turn off his cell phone. There had been no sound. This request was for the distraction of light caused by users checking the time, their e-mails, whatever.

It’s about time. We have become accustomed to announcements about silencing our cell phones. What I’d like to hear are announcements recognizing that light pollution in the movies or in the theater are just as annoying to audience members.

Oh brother -- who in the world checks their emails during a Cirque performance? Argh.
