Refuse raise, help country

I just read that President Obama is proposing a 2.9 percent pay raise for the Department of Defense in 2010. While I appreciate the sentiment, I ask President Obama and all members of Congress to join me in refusing a pay raise in 2010 and 2011 if necessary, until our economy has turned around.

The only way we will get though this tough time is to pull together and turn this thing around. America has faced problems before. Our perseverance and can-do attitude is the key to getting America back on track.

Thanks for the correction. You had me muttering to myself,"The poor gal has just had too many exchanges with solomon. If you don't watch out, that'll do it to you for sure".

" The fact is, people who do really valuable work for society do not get paid as much as those whose services we really need. "

OMG, I'm making as much sense as NM now. That should read: "The fact is, people who do really valuable work for society do not get paid as much as those whose services we really DO NOT need."

Blame it on a real nasty head cold.

TinaMcG

NM, you don't need to bring Obama into it. The fact is, people who do really valuable work for society do not get paid as much as those whose services we really need. Bill O'Reilley makes a fortune. Rush Limbaugh lives in a $44 million estate. Some very good teachers who are also Republicans make squat.

Don't look for correlations where there are none.

TinaG, you make a very good point and the funny part is the deadbeat crowd you mention that are over paid and are over valued, endorse Oabma at least the majority do. Of course we have to define value. Some teachers are good and some teachers are not so good. I would say a teacher that endorses and advocates socialism, promiscuity and victimology is not a good teacher. On the other hand, that petroleum engineer or that engineer that design a cleaner air pollution technology is not of any value either, especially the non-union flavor.

Major Moon,

Take the money!

"In my opinion our nation demands far too much from our military men and women and gives too little in return."

Boy, doesn't that bear repeating. It's a perfect example of the Bizarro-World nature of our society. Those whose jobs provide the least value to society get paid the most (strippers, celebrities, political pundits, and certain real estate agents I've dealt with...)

Those who provide the most value (military, nurses, clergy, police, firefighters, teachers) pretty much get stiffed.

I admire your thinking about military pay, major, but it'll never happen -- for good reasons and bad. In my opinion our nation demands far too much from our military men and women and gives too little in return. I have a relative who was stop-lossed and just started another deployment in Afghanistan even though his enlistment was up in January. And last year I exchanged several emails with a Marine major serving in Iraq. It choked me up to read his feelings about his frequent, lengthy separations from his wife and children since 9/11.

Congress should take pay CUTS, Nancy P should give up her private plan funded by taxpayers so she can feel special and important on her environmental rally trips around the world.
The majority of the employed, taxpayers are taking a pay cut, meanwhile a select percentage are recieving an additional $1000 they did not even pay in taxes on top not paying income tax at all.

Thank you for your service to our nation Major Moon.

I've been spending most of my time in Iowa lately (enpough punishment in and of itself). There is a Rush and Bill O approved "conservative" congressman from the western part of the State here. He spends an enourmous amount of time talking about the need to cut budgets and for "everyone" to tighten their belts and expect less. The one area he is in favort of an increase in spending is Congressional pay raises.

Everyone else should take less while he personally takes more. A true Rush Limbaugh "conservative".
