We, the people, lead our country

Marilyn Frenzel (3/29, Letters) writes that we need to remember the Bush administration and why we elected President Obama. She further states that Obama has surrounded himself with people smarter than the rest of us, and none of us are as qualified to lead as him.

Our Founding Fathers believed that God gave people fundamental rights and powers. The people elected leaders and lent them some of those powers. Leaders were to be constantly assessed for worthiness of their stewardship.

What needs to be remembered is why we became a nation to begin with and that we, the people are the leaders of our country. Our elected officials serve us, not the reverse. Constant vigilance is required of our nation’s citizens if personal freedoms are to be kept.

My point is that in saying "Bush supporters" you are painting with too broad a brush. Some of us may not have accepted the arguments against his policies but did not attempt to ban them. There are a number on this blog with whom there are not many major issues on which we are likely to reach a consensus. But that does not mean that I am unaware that they do have some sound ideas.

"The argument was, and is, that there were/are those elements out there who mean us harm and we have to take a stand against them."

...and that any debate, scrutiny, or questioning of the Bush administration's actions to deal with those threats was not to be tolerated during such a "critical" time.

And that is what many Obama supporters are now engaged in as well. During this time of economic crisis, any debate, scrutiny, or questioning of the Obama's administration's actions are not to be tolerated during such a "critical" time.

I don't remember that Bush supporters "used this ridiculous argument to justify their "war on terror" actions". The argument was, and is, that there were/are those elements out there who mean us harm and we have to take a stand against them. The stand that Bush took was accompanied by no further attacks in this country and with what seems to be the development of a successful conclusion in Iran. I for one never said you should not think about things. However I did say that those, including Obama, who said the surge had no chance of working were wrong.

Speaking of vigilance, 600,000 jobs lost last month unemployment up to 8.5%, thanks President Carter.

The premise of the original letter was ridiculous. The suggestion that leaders are to be free from scrutiny and debate is so ludicrous on it's face that it's hard for me to imagine someone buying into it.

Bush supporters used this ridiculous argument to justify their "war on terror" actions, and now, some Obama supporters are trying the same thing as part of their "war on economic crisis". How sad...

And yes, there's a difference between reasonable debate and scrutiny that seeks the "right" answer and partisan infighting that simply seeks to discredit the other. Sadly, Ms. Frenzel's letter made no such distinction, and equated ANY non-conformance with obstructionism.

THAT was my foot

So true; given how many of us were asleep at the wheel during the last eight years I'm surprised it's not worse!!!
