Don’t fear cyclists

I am a cyclist and have been following the cycling conversation with interest. I would like to offer a suggestion.

After living in Brooklyn, N.Y., Portland, Ore., and Liberty, I’ve noticed major differences in what drivers do when encountering bicyclists. In Brooklyn and Portland, drivers will confidently pass cyclists, even in two-way traffic.

I see no problems with this. In contrast, around Liberty people are often overcautious.

Drivers hang back from cyclists, stack up a line of cars, and then stew with frustration or anger.

Pass the cyclist! Two to three feet is plenty of space. You don’t need to move 10 feet over and floor it.

Like most cyclists, I’m a driver as well. As a driver I feel it is the responsibility of cyclists to know and obey the laws and to ride single file when necessary.

So where is the problem?
