People would be surprised to learn that lung cancer will kill nearly twice as many women as breast cancer, and three times as many men as prostate cancer. In Missouri, an estimated 12,620 people will die from cancer in 2009. About one in three of those deaths will be from lung cancer.
Gov. Jay Nixon has proclaimed November Lung Cancer Awareness month in Missouri. I know, because I wrote him requesting this proclamation.
In 2005, I lost my father to lung cancer. By the time he was diagnosed, he didn’t have a chance, although he tried to fight. He had several risk factors, and if there would have been some pre-screening or early detection programs, he could possibly still be here today.
I know there are others who should get the chance my dad did not have. It’s time that those with lung cancer have the chance to fight and win.
