As a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan, I made the trip to Kansas City to watch the Nov. 22 Steelers-Chiefs game. I didn’t come away with the victory I wanted, but I did gain a real appreciation for the Chiefs fans.
After the game, a man wearing a Chiefs jacket came up to me, shook my hand and said, “Wasn’t that a great game?” I allowed as how it was, with the exception of the final score.
Naturally there was some heckling directed at those of us wearing Steelers shirts, but none of it was nasty or mean-spirited — just good-natured exuberance after the game. One fellow grinned and asked me if I had torn the tag out of the neck of my jersey. He said that if I hadn’t I might be able to take it back for a refund.
I will come back the next time the Steelers and Chiefs play. I’m sure the Steelers will whip the Chiefs then. If they do, I can only hope that I will be half as gracious a winner as the Chiefs fans showed themselves to be.
