Nurses could ease health care crush

The health care reform bill is a milestone for the nation. With 46 million uninsured Americans, the status quo would be shameful for even a Third World country. Those without insurance go without preventive care. We should envision that which benefits the masses, creating a healthier America.

As an advanced practice nurse, the resultant legislation will undoubtedly have an effect on my practice. Using advanced practice nurses as independent primary care providers is an effective and efficient way to serve many areas of need.

The warrior Hannibal once said, “We will either find a way, or make one.” If the ensuing congressional actions can meld the different versions of the health care reform bill, we will have made our way to health care coverage commensurate with that of a leading world power.

However there are not 46M uninsured Americans, that is a fib.
There was a discussion of this on C-SPAN and the actual number of uninsured that need help is around 12-15M.

So could Physician Assistants.

Earl, thank you for being a nurse. My mother was a nurse and my daughter in law is a nurse. Both would agree with your observations. I hope that some day you and my DIL will get to practice primary care. It is rediculous to use a Dr.s time to treat the majority of routine illness's that they deal with. The times I have seen a NP were better that seeing the Dr. They seeem more concerned and supportive than the Dr., who is probably tired of looking at sore throats.
