P&L District

I find it amazing that with drive-by shootings and young black males killing each other and some innocent bystanders on our streets, the only thing our community leaders can find to object to is a dress code (11/15, Local, “Protesters fault policies of Power & Light District”). What hypocrisy.

Perhaps a drive through the inner city would open their eyes: neighborhoods gone to ruin, empty houses being used to sell drugs, yards full of trash, derelict cars sitting around stripped of everything of any value. The list goes on and on.

So let’s all dismiss the real problem and concentrate on something as frivolous as a dress code.

I was down at the Power & Light District this last Friday night, the 13th. I went down to get out and people watch and have a beer. People of all ages and ethnicities were there having a good time, including Caucasians, Asians and African-Americans. Most everyone was dressed casually, including the African-American males. There was enough of a police presence and they were checking IDs at the entrances. Everything was well organized.

By the way, the people checking IDs were African-American, and they appeared to be checking everyone equally. I did see an African-American bouncer talk to a Caucasian male because he had a big tear in his jeans.

I have visited the area a few times, always on a Friday or Saturday night, and it’s always the same enjoyable atmosphere.

Next time I go down there, I am going to take my camera and take pictures of the scene there: the crowd drinking, dancing and socializing. I’m glad we have it here now.

If it were about money they wouldn’t put restrictions on clothing; not to say people shouldn’t be decent but their perception of decent targets negatively the community they built that place in. Keep them out but take their tax dollars. Like I said I would be willing to take race out of the equation and just simply say make it fair, be fair with judgments. They are not fair thus making a race issue them selves.

The perception of thuggery. Just because it's the liberal fashion does not mean businesses and patron want that element.
There is absolutely no proof of racism.
Someone that is rally concerned about racism would not be tryng to get money rather trying to gt resolve. It all comes down to money, not what is right or moral.
Race is just used as a smoke screen for th real reasoning, money.

Tell everyone to tuck in their shirt NOMO, and there will be no problem at all. Oh by the way pimp and gangsters dont hang out down there and the wanna be’s are somewhere else making money so they dont hang out down there either. All the trouble they have had in the PL were not thugs at least not black or hispanic thugs so maybe thier focus should be on them.

Tuck your shirt in and stop trying to be "pimp" or "gangster".
Act like a respectable person instead of some ghetto wannabe and you will be welcome at most places.

I have experienced this issue a few times and two time I was Business casual coming from work for a happy hour. One time I had on Jeans, Polo and Sketchers; the same thing as most white males had on and they looked at me and said that the bottom of my shirt hung down too long. Wasn’t even past my but and no longer than a button down. I saw the look on the doorman faces and how they hated to tell me I couldn’t get in. One said come in through the other entrance and he would let me in because he knows hoe bias the dress code is or was (explain later). Now A white manager saw us walking up and adjusting our shirts and tucking them in and said this time I will let you in but I can tell that your sleeves and shirt tail is too long but since you tried I will let you in. One time I had everything tucked in and was told to un-tuck the shirt only to be told the shirt is still too long.

We’ve been going around this all morning: race card, status of the black community, dress code, thug, baggy pants. Did I leave any trigger words out? The fact remains, the dress code in the p&ld is not enforced equally. If this cannot be done, the dress code should be eliminated.

I would love to be the judge & executioner there. I love the baggy style, it looks comfortable. I love when people to be laid back, comfortable and easy going. Just because someone dresses in a different style, should not keep them from enjoying the area. I would probably let you ( all poster’s ) in the door. I think we would all have a good time.

It cracks me up that people can comment on something they have no idea about, “concentrate on the real problem” lol ridicules!

First of all they strategically place those black guys at the entrances for a reason. NOT working. Second yes you should be aware of what you wear as in saggy pants where you can see your butt. Most if not all the people that get turned away have on clothing that is up on their waste. But the profiling targets saggy clothing which most big people have on for a reason or it’s a culture style that is made that way.

The fact is this. People that care on how they look are going to spend money. That is how business' see them and it is their right.

I worked in the casino for years and if you came in wearing a sports jacket and looked nice, you bet the pitboss' would be kissing your butt to make sure you left with less than you came in with. If you came in looking like a gangster then most likely you would be ignored till you moved to a different table (or pit).

Is it fair? No. But that is life, and when I was 5 I was told life was not fair. Take your lumps and move on.

I don't believe W.J. is making excuses.
As horrible as racism and bigotry is, he thinks there are more pressing problems in the inner city then the dress code at Power & Light.

Proud American

Exactly....we have been over this before. Quit using the race card!

W.F & John, you need to come with something other than the same old excuses. We have been over this before. There is racism being practice in the p&ld and it need to be dealt with. Stop making excuses
