The Star’s editorial on the death penalty (1/21, "The high cost of death") pointed out some interesting facts on how flawed our legal system is.
The only reason the death penalty is a bad law is because the criminals have too many rights and the system doesn’t have the guts to step up to the plate and use it, especially when the criminals admit they did the crime. Maybe things would change if we became as aggressive with criminals as they are with victims.
Part of the solution might be for the parole board to not consider prison overcrowding and budgeting in determining parole. One of the men who murdered my daughter was on parole for murder and had beaten a murder case in Missouri. (11/25/04, A1, "Stallings convicted in KCK killing spree") He didn’t get the death penalty, but another life-without-parole sentence.
Now he lives better than many of our veterans. I have yet to understand the justice in that system.
